Lynfield College provides a high-quality school-wide, integrated, culturally responsive career development programme across all year levels.
A career brings together all the experiences a person has over their lifetime, including their family life, friendships, culture, community activities, leisure choices, work and learning.
Career development helps students link ideas about preparation, exploration, self-awareness and decision making to different situations. As students develop their capability to self-manage their life and learning, they need opportunities and support to successfully transition from school to further learning and work. Hui Mai teachers mentor their small group of students through the pastoral care system. Curriculum teachers link their courses with careers, so that content and context are inherently real and future-focused for our students.
Lynfield College students are offered Tertiary experiences to encourage engagement and learning.
Lynfield College programmes and services focus on developing students’ career literacy and capabilities so they are resilient, confident, connected and actively involved in lifelong learning.
Developing employability skills can enable young people to have full and satisfying careers while contributing to a sustainable future for Aotearoa New Zealand.
The Gateway programme helps senior students understand how these key competencies ‘look and feel’ in the workplace, (whether they plan to transition into post-tertiary or work) with students experiencing and developing skills in an authentic context through a work placement with an employer. Curriculum Vitae (CV) and interview coaching are offered as key job seeking skills.
The NZ Curriculum’s vision and values relate closely to the key career competencies:
• Developing self-awareness: Young people understand themselves and the influences on them.
• Exploring opportunities: Young people investigate opportunities in learning and work
• Deciding and acting: Young people make and adjust their plans, manage change and transition and take appropriate action.
A dedicated Careers Services team are vailable to have career conversations with students. Whanau, aiga or family are encouraged to be part of their teen’s career development.
